The Beginning
What if everything you were ever looking for was already contained within? We often look outside ourselves because does the ocean know its own name? Does a rock recognize the layers it contains? Does an acorn know it'll one day be a tree?
Within every cell of the human body, there exists a blueprint for everything you yearn to become, for everything you already are. So it doesn't really matter where you begin, as long as the beginning begins within.
Right now, take a deep breath, center yourself in the garden of you, allow your breath to expand your universe and then allow it to flow outward with your exhale. So within, so without. Where is life found?
The Dream
I had this super interesting experience the other night where I dreamed I was writing a poem. In the dream I had no pen or paper so I kept memorizing the lines so I would remember it. I only got as far as the first stanza, but the coolest thing happened. When I awoke, there the poem was, alive, brought into the waking realm. Because I had been memorizing it, my conscious mind remembered. The first thing I of course then did, was write it down.
It got me thinking as I went through my day about the fine line between waking life and dreams. Just for fun, I began to pretend that life itself was a dream and the people I encountered were simply mirrors of myself, full of symbolism and meaning. I only did it for about an hour while I walked around the neighborhood, but it was a super cool experience because it removed some of the gravity of the day from my shoulders and made life simply feel fun.
When we see people as reflections of ourselves or even parts of ourselves, in the same way we interpret dreams, a deep sense of acceptance begins to emerge. Gone is the blame or separation game, and curiosity takes its place.
Like wow! That homeless man on the corner; let me process my own relationship to abundance consciousness or fear of lack. Or that driver speeding without an ounce of caution; where in my own life am I moving too quickly? The game can go on and on, depending how you want to play.
The Butterfly
You can even become a tree if you'd like, or a flower, or a butterfly... which reminds me of a quote some of you may have heard by the Taoist sage of the fourth century, Chuang Tzu, "I did not know whether I was Chuang Tzu dreaming I was a butterfly; or a butterfly dreaming I was Chuang Tzu." (Two Suns Rising by Jonathan Star, pg 50.)
Life is quite like this, isn't it? We often work so hard to obtain what feels outside ourselves, only to discover that by letting go and allowing ourselves to be in the flow of life, everything we ever wanted was there all along.
